โต character information
name: Ivan Niklaus
canon: Original
age: 600-ish (heโs stopped counting)
canon point: Modern day
history: full write-up here // the basics: Ivan was once a wizard who turned to Necromancy to find a way to save his dying wife. In the process, he committed crimes against the natural order that were so egregious that Death itself conscripted him into its service as a grim reaper, leaving him unable to die until his debt is repaid.
abilities:
personality: First, and most obviously of all, Ivan is a quiet man. He often drifts to the background of any setting heโs in, largely unnoticed and very much okay with that fact. Attention isnโt necessarily something he craves, especially now given the very lonely nature of his job. Heโs not one for saying more than he needs to or offering up explanations if he doesnโt have to, speaking in short sentences with very little flair.
The loss of his wife left him deeply scarred and more than a little bitter over the cold indifference of death, but now that heโs been given the ability to see how long another person might live, it makes it especially hard for him to forge connections. He is kind to the people he meets in passing. He might even have an extended conversation if the stars align just right, but he doesnโt get close to others. Losing them scares him. Outliving them scares him. He hasnโt learned how to live in the moment, and it will take something close to a miracle to get him there.
However, despite his feelings about Death and what it took from him, he understands that the souls placed in his care as a grim reaper arenโt a part of that. Grim (ha) as it may be, heโs good at his job. His quiet nature serves him well, as heโs been able to shape it into gentle compassion. A listening ear or a steady shoulder when people might need it. He knows how to read people and has a decent handle on what to say or do in a given situation. Death comes in many forms, after all, and the souls he reaps all bring different experiences to the table. Needing to adapt to that is a part of the job.
Thatโs not to say everything is sunshine and roses for him, of course. Heโs weary down to his very soul, left to wander the earth long, long after he would have rather left it. Ivan has a perpetually tired look about him, and itโs honestly giving exactly what it says on the tin. Heโs exhausted, and dry-witted, and very Done with everything. He wonโt go out of his way to be sarcastic, but heโs definitely ready with a dry remark when the situation calls for it.
Being unable to die has also done him no favors in the self-preservation department. He has no regard for his own life or safety, and if the need arises, he fights recklessly, leaving himself open to injury in order to get the upper hand. Heโs also got a bit of a caffeine and nicotine problem, but literally, what are they gonna do? Kill him? Nah.
All that aside, Ivan is a sponge for random information. Living as long as he has means heโs had a lot of time to read and learn. Heโs the kind of guy youโd want at your bar trivia table without a doubt, if he wasnโt such a bummer sometimes.

abilities:
๐ immortality. As part of his penance, Ivan is unable to die. Though he is immortal, heโs not invulnerable. He can still get hurt and still very much feels pain, but any wound, even fatal ones, will heal within moments. (If this needs to be nerfed, that is absolutely fine. It would be very funny for him to realize he can in fact die only for the game mechanics to revive him instead.)
๐ inhuman abilities. Ivan stopped being human a long time ago. Heโs stronger, faster, and more powerful than a regular human might be. Not to an insane degree โ he canโt lift cars and stuff โ but he certainly packs more of a punch than a beanpole like himself should be able to manage.
๐ shadow magic. Whatever magic Ivan could wield before his descent into reaperdom has long left him. In its place is the ability to manipulate shadows and darkness like a physical force, including moving through shadows to travel and summoning a scythe from shadow.
๐ reaper senses. Ivan can tell by looking at a person how long they have to live, and is drawn to those about to die as a part of his duty. (Iโll be nerfing this/saying itโs a bit wonky after his arrival since thatโs not information that every PC would have available or want to share.)
